There is no reason why a child with hearing loss can’t enjoy every second of the day and grow into a confident, happy and empathetic adult.

Here's the premise of this entire course:

"The Sound of a Smile: Yoga Therapy for children with hearing loss" is an 8 week program delivered online especially designed to be a fun, meaningful journey for both parents and children. Thanks to dedicated video-lessons, parents will be given the tools to better understand how to engage, play and help their kids in the best way. At the same time, children will have access to short and playful yoga sessions where I will be interacting directly with them through games and fun poses. These videos will follow step by step the same program as the video-lessons for parents.

Key areas of development:

Here are the main areas we will help your child develop throughout the program

  • FINE AND GROSS MOTOR SKILLS: the ability to create movements, fine motor skills are involved in small movements such as drawing and writing; we use gross motor skills when we run and swim.

  • BALANCE: the ability to not fall over when doing activities such as standing on one leg, biking without training wheels or ice skating.

  • SELF-ESTEEM: the way we feel about ourselves. Self-esteem can have a big impact on how a person experiences social and academic situations.

  • FOCUS AND ATTENTION: the ability to stay on task. This gets harder when we’re tired or when other sounds or sights are competing for our attention.

  • READING SKILLS AND EYE STRENGHT: the ability to keep your eyes fixed on the right spot on the page. Even if you know your phonics and your blending, if your gaze is unstable and “dances all over the page”, reading will be more challenging.

    • This week we will start with the most gentle exercises. We will balance on one leg as flamingos and we will feel the twist in our trunk when we create orange juice and so much more.

    Week 2: butterflies and trees

    • This week we will stretch our legs and become confident butterflies. We will further improve our tree pose, building on the practice we've been doing last week.

    Week 3: frogs and burrito rolls

    • The poses of these week are likely to make your kids giggle! The frog is a great exercise for kids who feel energetic. The burrito roll is a favorite for many children, and many choose to stay in this position for quite some time.

    Week 4: dogs and bamboo

    • The positions are getting more challenging week after week. Among the poses of this week, we will practice standing strong like a dog, and balancing like a bamboo in the wind.

    Week 5: vulcanoes and snakes

    • This week, the vulcano will explode, which is great for children to help with feelings of anger and low self-esteem. We will have a number of other fun poses, among which a gentle backbend in a snake position.

    • This week's poses include the dynamic wood chopper pose which is a favorite among quieter and louder kids alike. We will also be trying the challenging balance pose moon this week.

    • More animals this week! We will include moving like a strong crab and bending like a giraffe. The exercises will help your child to feel focused, confident and balanced.

  • Sabine Hobbel - Yoga Therapist

    Meet the instructor

    Sabine Hobbel has a background in psychology and mental health research. She is also a trained yoga teacher for children. She has been working with children for over a decade in both online and offline settings. She uses yoga therapy in public and private schools in Milan, Italy. In addition to that, she collaborates with NGOs such as Save the Children to help children from different economic, cultural and health backgrounds live their best lives through the use of yoga therapy. In 2014, she discovered that her son has a permanent significant bilateral sensorineural hearing loss.

About Little Light Yoga and Movement

Little Light has been created by Sabine Hobbel to help families and children of all different economic, cultural and health backgrounds to live life to the fullest.

Personalised fun and engaging sessions are created to support children and their families through the use of yoga and movement. A selection of
situations Little Light has worked with include families living with hearing loss, ADHD, autism and arthritis, as well as living well despite recently changed family dynamics (deceased, severely ill or divorced family members).

Changes parents and educators have noticed in their children after
working with Little Light include having become more relaxed and confident and having a brighter spark in their eyes and a bigger smile on their faces.

Children themselves describe the sessions as “great fun” and “really awesome”.

FAQ

  • My child has never done yoga or movement before, can they still take part in this course?

    Absolutely! All exercises are explained in a fun and engaging way, suitable for children between the ages of 4 and 8. Your child wouldn't be the first to try this yoga course without having tried anything similar before. There is no previous experience required to enjoy this course and to benefit optimally.

  • My child can't sit still, so is yoga still an option for them?

    Actually, there is very little sitting still in this course! The exercises work well for children with a wide range of energy levels and ability to focus, so it doesn't matter if your child is not what you imagine to be a 'typical yoga child'. All exercises have been tested on numerous children with hearing loss both online and in real life, many of them described by their parents as very lively children.

  • Will you record my child while they do yoga? I don't want my child to end up in yoga videos online.

    No, I will not be looking at or recording your child while they do yoga! Your child can watch the prerecorded sessions I created for them as part of this course and they can participate by trying the poses themselves. Alternatively, you can learn the poses from other prerecorded videos that are part of this course, and you can easily teach your own child in this way.

  • What age does my child need to be to benefit from this course?

    This course is thought to work best for children between the ages of 4 and 8. If your child is younger or older than this, please feel free to contact me and we will see if this course may still work for them.
